Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar levels. Blood sugar, also known as blood glucose, is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells. It comes from the food we eat, especially carbohydrates.
Type 1 Diabetes: This is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar by allowing glucose to enter the body’s cells. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin injections or an insulin pump to manage their blood sugar levels. This type of diabetes usually develops in childhood or early adulthood.
There is also a condition called gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy when blood sugar levels rise higher than normal. It usually goes away after childbirth, but women who have had gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
